There's No Place Like Home

@Jane Smith

The fires were mostly put out, for now. She and the other Weres had met about the vampires, the word had gone around about the ease at which the Were virus could be transmitted now, and she had met and talked to Katya. She needed to send out that text to see if anyone had a place for the wolf-to-be to work but for right now, she was preoccupied bringing in the food she'd brought home. Barbecue smoked ribs, fries, baked beans. There was enough here to feed a small army. Or a few wolves.

Sullivan knew she was on the way in with food but Jane, assuming she was still here, did not. Closing the door behind her with her foot, Alina carried everything into the kitchen and set the bags on the counter. Pulling everything out of the brown paper bags, Alina raised her voice (in a non-angry way) and called out:

"Jane!"

She didn't need to call for Sullivan. He'd know she was home.

Jane had spent the majority of her time at Alina's hiding in the guest room or camped out on one side of the couch, hunched over her laptop to distract herself with work. (It ended up being a very productive week for her.) She was doing the former, computer propped on top of a pillow on her lap, when Alina called her name.

At the summons, Jane rolled off of the bed, adjusted her shorts and loose t-shirt, hoping she didn't come off as sloppy or lazy, and emerged from the guest room. The smell of food greeted her.

"Hey," she greeted, glancing between the food and Alina.

Jane’s appearance happened quickly. Alina looked up, head bobbing in greeting as she pushed a plate on the counter towards Jane. "Hungry?" She hadn’t known if Jane actually liked barbecue but she could always say no if that was the case. Alina plated her own food (a small mountain of ribs, a hill of potato salad, and a puddle of baked beans) before moving to sit at the barstool on the other side of the kitchen island.

"How’re you doing?"

Jane didn't need to be asked twice. She portioned a little bit of everything onto a plate before wiggling up onto a bar stool,

She hated that question, didn't know how to answer or how she was supposed to be doing other than feeling like shit. "Same old," she answered instead, hesitating a moment before adding, "K-Katya texted me. We're meeting this weekend." Another pause. "She—" but the words immediately terminated in an exhaled hum, brows drawn together. She shook her head slightly after a moment and focused on her food. That's all she had, sorry.

Same old. Alina had guessed this but the confirmation made her nod, listening as Jane explained a little more. She was meeting up with Katya and hanging out. Good for them, Alina thought briefly, not pressing Jane to continue what she was saying. This also could have been because of the bite of food she’d just taken, but no. She didn’t ask after swallowing it either, taking a moment to suck her finger clean before speaking again.

"She seems like a good kid. Pretty reasonable." She’d only talked to her at length the once but had no doubts they’d talk again soon. Alina would give it a few days before she texted her to check up on her. Another bite meant silence from her for the moment, chewing as she glanced at Jane.

She offered a smile and a mumbled "yeah" in agreement, not sure what else to say on the subject. She picked at her food in silence for a few moment before glancing up at Alina. "Thanks, for... all that." The picking her up from bumfuck nowhere, letting her crash here, handling the whole "surprise you're a werewolf" thing. Y'know. All that.
