Crystal Springs

@ro

Charlie was at work, today he'd stationed up at one the entrance of the crystal springs trails, helping visitors decide which route was best to getting to the hot springs, and informing about spa hours and so forth. Charlie enjoyed most parts about being a park ranger, and it suited him well. However today for some reason he wasn't feeling the whole, "what can I help you with?" "oh there's a what out of the trail?" "yes ma'am it is hot today!" deal, and he wanted nothing more than to go enjoy the hot springs himself. Luckily he was nearing noon, which meant his lunch break. Today, a lunch break spent out in the springs sounded like a lunch break well spent.

Of course that included the meal he'd packed himself, which was calling to him from his work jeep nearby.

Only ten minutes left, hopefully no one came by with an outrageous request, that'd really fuck up the plan wouldn't it?

With his adventure last time in Red Rock, he didn't think he'd ever find himself back even close to where that incident had taken place. Though that was in the past. He and Fletch were cool again and he had heard a lot in passing about a hot spring somewhere in the area. Not that he had ever been to one but he knew how they worked. Geothermal vents under the surface, super heating pools of water. Said to be good for the skin and soul and right now.. It seemed better than anything a hot shower could provide him.

His bike had been a good purchase. The time to get here had been a little iffy and he might have picked an uber to get here a bit quicker but he didn't regret the buy. It helped him out in town more than he thought it could and the only reason he didn't attempt it today was because he knew he'd have to bike back and if he relaxed in a hot springs.. Well that seemed unlikely he'd wish to do anything of the sort.

The trail station was up ahead and he jogged forward, raising his arm in greeting to the one that stood behind it. "Afternoon!" His jog slowed to a casual walk as he approached, an easygoing smile on his lips as he pushed his glasses up some. "So um. I heard there was a hot spring.. Or multiple? Nearby and well. Never been out this way to see them and.." He lifted up the towel and the bag looped around his arm some in a universal gesture, an almost bashful smile on his lips now.

F U C K, please keep going buddy please it's lunch time-

Shit he's waving now. Charlie just smiled, covering up the soft sigh of regret for not having taken an early lunch. The man who approached was tall, with dark hair and glasses, and he was at least friendly enough. Charlie could be mad at the situation, but he had a hard time being frustrated with people, especially when they were smiling. "Hey, what can I help you with?" he said for the millionth time today,

It wasn't the first time he'd heard that question today, and had to either give directions or escort the slightly incompetent ones. But this time it was actually the perfect request. Charlie let out a sigh of relief, reaching out to rest his hand on the other's shoulder, chuckling as he replied, "Dude, thank you so much. I thought you were about to ask me to like go help you fix your car tire or something, you have no idea what weird things I get asked out here." He dropped his hand, remembering that not everyone was as welcoming of contact as he, "So yeah I was actually about to head out on lunch break and go to the hot springs, so I can be your guide if you want?" he offered.

It seemed fate had decided to be kind and bless him today. This man was friendly enough and given the relief he saw that spread over his face.. Perhaps two had been saved that day. The hand on his shoulder was nothing but it triggered a mental response in Rowan. Friends? " Oh.. Oh no, so you're in luck! I don't actually have a car. I uh.. Had to catch a ride out here. I mean I could have biked but." It had seemed a bit pointless. This was meant for a nice afternoon of relaxing and working up another sweat getting home just didn't seem like fun and easy to him.

His brows rose some before a full and genuine smile graced his face. "I bet a lot of things, given the area. Oh no, help. My car broke down ten miles out and I need gas." His smile seemed to only brighten a bit more. "Really? I mean.. Yeah! I'd love to. I'll try not to make you work on your lunch."

Yes! Friends!

He laughed as the other man explained that he needn't worry, for he didn't have a car and had caught a ride out to the park. "Perfect, I'll keep my lug wrench or whatever its called in the jeep then," he replied, laughing as he did so. Yeah he was very glad that this was the guy who'd appeared.

Charlie grinned as the other man did his impression of people asking him stuff, not only because he'd been asked that question, but because he'd been caught asking that question a few times too. That was a crazy coincidence to be honest, that little more than a week ago he'd been in that situation with Alex the kit kat eating car shop owner. woAH, freaky. The man with glasses seemed into the idea of company, and Charlie started off towards the jeep, holding out a hand behind him to gesture, 'one sec', "Yeah yeah it's no trouble, I was heading that way anyway so yeah no problem." He snatched from the work jeep his back pack, which held all his hiking stuff and most importantly his lunch. There, he was now set.

He quickly jogged back over to his new companion, his thumbs through the straps of his pack. "Alright, ready when you are. Oh and I'm Charlie! Or Chuck both are great!" he said.

Laughter followed him and Rowan waited patiently for him to return. He was friendly and nice and Rowan was thanking the sky above that he finally seemed to run into someone who was genuinely pleasant and wasn't just going to pop off. "I'm pretty garbage at anything that needs repairing. So I'd likely just kinda.. Flounder."

This was the best news he'd had in a while! He swung his towel up over his shoulder, adjusting the bag he had still around his arm and as he came back and gestured for him to follow, he did without a second thought. "Rowan. Or I guess Ro. I don't know. I don't think anyone's ever called me that before and of course I'm ready! I feel like I'm just drowning right now. " And a nice hot relaxing dip with a new friend seemed perfect in his mind.

He moved up to walk alongside Charlie, brown eyes glancing to him every so often as he spoke. "So have you worked here long? Seems like you kinda know the place.. But I guess if you're working out here you have to."

Rowan, or Ro. Ro was fun, and if Charlie had nicknames he might as well use this guys. "Alright then Ro," he replied with a smile, and then with a quick beckon he whirled around and started towards the trail.

It was a relatively hot day, but it always was wasn't it. A dip was exactly what Charlie needed right now. He was happy to talk and walk now though, turning to look at Ro when he was asked a question. He chuckled as Ro spoke, "I'm actually pretty new, I got assigned here about a month ago! Definitely one of the first things you do though, in training. Getting to know where everything is. Can't have the guides getting lost that'd be pretty shitty," he replied, remembering that time his first week here when he'd done just that, and had been saved by the amazing Ashley. Wonder what she's up to now.

He beamed at the chosen nickname. No one had ever called him Ro before, despite it being right there and he felt a sense of pride. This meant they were officially friends now and it was a nice feeling. No one really gave nicknames if they weren't planning on being friends, right? He laughed, bobbing his head into a nod as they walked, the sun beating down on the new pair. "I can't even imagine. Hey, help. I'm lost. You too? Likely wouldn't look good for the PR and marketing of the place."

He cleared his throat, bringing a hand up to push back through his hair and attempt to get some of it off his already sweat covered brow. "So what made you pick here? Did you have an interest in the place or just live close by?"

"Oh yeah no it'd be awful. Very embarrassing," he laughed, glancing away and scratching the back of his head. Yikes that was literally him once LOL.

Charlie was sweating too, but he was embracing it. He'd been out here sweating too long to care about how his golden brown fluffy curls had started to stick to his forehead. He was asked about how he'd chosen the Glenn, "Well actually, park rangers technically work for the US Forest Service, and we don't get to decide which park we work at. I got assigned here, it's my first ranger job though and I love it so far, and Colorado is way better than I thought. Kinda just thought it'd be a pile of rocks or something," he replied, with a hand gesture accompanying "pile of rocks" as if it needed a better visual.

Rowan looked over at Charlie before another smile bloomed. Yes, he'd like Charlie. He already did, really. As his question was answered, Rowan looked around and this time he laughed, it echoing out as it slowly trailed off. "No, no I mean.. That's pretty cool though! I love it here. Kinda funny that I've lived here for a few years now and I've never seen the hot springs. So they better be worth this heat!"

He was joking, of course. Any adventure outside and with a friend would be worth it. Plus, maybe they could even exchange phone numbers! Wouldn't that be exciting!

"I mean, there's a lot here. I guess you just need a sense of adventure."

A few years and never seen the hot springs! Charlie was about to fix that! ”Never seen the!!- never seen the hot springs!?” he said as though this was insane, acting up like he always did when he was having a good time, ”Dude, I’m about to fix that for you. They’re definitely worth it,” he finished with a nod and a friendly shoulder punch to annunciate the word “definitely”.

He totally agreed with Ro’s statement, a new place could only be boring if you didn’t care enough to explore it. Luckily for Chuck, that wasn’t a problem. ”So you’ve been here a few years? Where were you from?” he asked, doing his best to keep focus on Ro but also fighting the urge to run up the steep root covered incline they were currently on.

Rowan had the good graces to look almost offended. "I've just never been!" There was.. A teasing edge to his voice? Finally. Someone who knew how to joke around, even if Rowan didn't think himself very good at it. Charlie was a nice change of pace. One he hoped he could keep around. The shoulder punch caught him a little off guard but he rolled with it and merely laughed. "With a hot springs connoisseur like you, I can't go wrong. Glad I met you out here, Charlie. You probably just saved my life."

The sun was still beating down and Rowan found the air a bit too hot for his liking. Though soon, all of that would be taken care of. "Chigaco, actually. My folks moved here when I was younger and I just kinda followed them. I stuck inside though. Even tried to get back to the big city but..Just never panned out. So now I take pictures and I'm hoping to get published soon!" With Ceri's help, maybe he could accomplish that goal.

Charlie laughed again at 'you probably just saved my life'. "Happy to help," he replied, with a hand on his heart as though this was the most sincere statement he could make, just for funsies. He was very happy to help though, it was in his nature. He had a rather hard time saying no actually.

He trudged up the hill until they'd reached the top, only to find more canopy covered trail ahead. The walk shouldn't be too much longer, but Charlie was impatient and could hardly wait.

"Chicago?! So you must be burning up right now, it's like winter all year in Chicago right?" he asked but mostly as a joke. Ro mentioned also that he took pictures, and hoped to get them published soon. Charlie's eyebrows raised with interest, "What kind of pictures do you do?"

"Well I'm still glad. I might have even burnt to death out here." And that felt like no joke to him. There was too much sun for his pale hued skin and he knew how easily he burnt. He'd likely be sore tomorrow but at the expense of meeting a new friend? He figured he could suffer through. He laughed again, enjoying how much Charlie seemed to ease it from him. "Something like that. Not all the time but it's usually.. You know. Windy. Hence Windy City. We used to have an apartment down by the river and I swear that every time the wind came through, the whole thing rocked."

He fished out his phone from the bag and pressed the home screen button before it lit up and he pulled up the blog with all his pictures on it thus far, holding it out to Charlie with a smile. "I just started up again, actually. Nature. People. Anything that really just catches my eye. I have some good ones up on my site right now but I'm still working on it."

One of the perks of not being the whitest of whites, was that it was much harder to burn. In bright summer sun like this, it'd take about an hour before Charlie would feel the sizzle. He'd usually get freckled up and tanner first. That was certainly happening now, with those UV rays beating down on them like this. Ro on the other hand, having brought the idea of 'burning to death' to Charlie's attention - he could foresee a lot of aloe in his new pal's future. He wasn't sure if Ro was already wearing, but he offered anyway, "If you need some sunscreen I got some in that top pocket."

Ro continued to about Chicago and it's weather. Hence Windy City, unfortunately Ro, Charlie wasn't the most well versed in geography and he didn't get the reference there, he just kept smiling and listening and laughing when Ro explained how his apartment would rock with the gusts.

"Oh sick lemme see," he replied, reaching for the phone that Ro handed him. Nature, people, things that caught the eye, these were good pictures. "These are amazing, like really good. Hey if you ever need a model in park ranger shorts I'm your guy, just so you know," he said, goofing as always but sincere about the quality of the photos.

He looked at the top pocket of the bag Charlie had and almost greedily reached for it. "Again, you're saving my life and my skin." It didn't take him long to find the bottle and frantically he was rubbing it over his face, neck, arms. Anywhere he could reach that he knew would likely be a hellish red tomorrow morning. He felt like he emptied half the bottle and he made a promise to buy Charlie more once he got back into town.

His attention turned to him, halfway between smearing the sunscreen on his nose, still walking forward. "Really? You really think so?" There was a genuine pleasure and shock in his voice and it showed fully. "I mean.. I did bring my camera with me. So maybe if you'd like to model or something." He could see the goof of a man now, leaning against a tree, looking off into the distance. Or maybe mid climb up a small hill, a dramatic flare and he couldn't help it. He laughed at the mental image.

"That's what friends are good for, right? So maybe after we get to the hot springs, you can see if you still think it'd be a good idea!"

Charlie chuckled again as Ro pulled the sunscreen out and began slathering himself with it like a tree with honey in Pokemon. "Aww shucks," he replied to Ro's comment, jokingly as always. He was a goof.

In regards to the pictures, Charlie was totally serious. They were really good! "Yeah I think so!" he replied, though in all honesty even if they weren't good he wouldn't be able to tell him so. His eyes widened when his friend said he'd brought the camera. He stopped walking, mouth agape, "Wait seriously? Can we like... actually though?" he said with a boyish grin, though he was entirely serious. This would seal their friendship, doing something stupid in the woods! Since coming to Cordova he'd made a lot of what he referred to as friends and acquaintances. He was yet to make a bro. Maybe this was the day.

He started walking again when Ro spoke again. Heck yeah he'd do it, and after the hot springs sounded great. "Sounds great," he replied.

He liked Charlie. He really liked Charlie. He didn't have many friends to call his own and this felt like the fastest forming of a friendship ever. It had to be a world record or something. "Well, yeah. Nothing's stopping us! Maybe if the pictures are good enough, I'll put them on my blog!" Wouldn't that be a treat! He'd have something to remember meeting his new best friend by and that thought alone thrilled him to the core.

Rowan looked around, still a bit pleased at the expression of his friend with a lopsided grin of his own. "Are we close? You may have to peel me out of there by the end of this." His muscles were sore.

"Shiiit, I'm gonna be on a blog," he replied through laughter as they continued their trudge to the springs. The next question was asked with impeccable timing, as they were just about to round on them. The other side of the hill, the hot springs would be visible in all their steamy glory. "No worries! We're actually... here!" he said as his head bobbed over the top of the incline and the rocks and stones surrounding the springs came into view. He hurried the rest of the way over, then back down a little to where the lush natural area had been carved out into a literal hot tub, sizzling at the surface and all.

There were more up ahead on other terraces, but this one would do just fine. He turned back to Ro, hands on his hips and a smile on his face, and in his most tour guide-y voice he said, "Welcome to North Glenn's natural hot springs accessible by trail, please enjoy!"

Even if he had known what to expect, he still would have been impressed. Charlie's voice rang out and Rowan couldn't help the laugh that bubbled forth once more. "All thanks to my wonderful guide! A clearly splendid man with great tastes. He--" His voice cut out and instead he had to take a minute to gather himself. It looked like something straight out of a movie. The picturesque scene of the pools of hot mineral water with the backdrop of the Colorado wildlife and flora. He began to lower his bag some, finally finding his feet to move forward still.

"Oh, wow." The water and scenery seemed to be calling his name and he looked over at Charlie who still had that smile on his face. "I'm going to have to come up here more often. Is there uh.. A place I can change?"
Wehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Quote

The look of Ro's face when he saw the springs, and the beautiful view beyond brought a smile to Charlie's face. Yeah, he'd felt that way too, the first time he'd seen them. Nature, she was the fuckin best.

A place to change? Uhh. Nope, that's what trees are for buddy, "You can change behind a tree or something, I was just gonna..." he replied pausing to pull his shirt over his head, "change here." he finished. He slipped out of his boots and socks, and started to pull off his pants when he paused, mid thought, then called to Ro, "You don't mind if I just wear my boxers right?" This was his plan, seeing as he brought extra clothes but not for swimming. Though he hadn't expected to be enjoying the natural spring with anyone else, so he didn't want to make it awkward.

This was fine. He could only nod at Charlie as he spoke, working to free himself of the shirt that had grown far too damp along the way. "No! I mean, that's fine. I was.. Well I was going to wear my own too." He had at least the good sense to bring a towel, though he might not even need it. The hot afternoon sun would likely dry him before he ever got dressed once more. He looked around before ducking behind a row of trees that looked thick enough to hide him.

He hadn't ever undressed in front of someone before and once free of his shoes, socks and pants, he came back around, a slow grin calling out for the other. "The beacons have been lit. Gondor calls for aid!" A nerdy joke he hoped the other would catch. He was certainly pale enough to fit the role of a beacon. Though he did look at the springs before making his way over, dipping a foot in before he slowly eased the rest of his body in, glasses steaming up some from the sudden change from dry to humid heat.

Nice! Boxer bros, Charlie smiled at the response then did the final bit of the ceremony, and pulled down his shorts to reveal his white cotton boxers. He stepped out of the shorts, almost tripping over one of the legs, then started towards the hot spring's edge. The water was clear, a rich and sizzling condensation hovered a mist above the surface. He looked up and over his shoulder when he heard Ro's voice, and with a toothy grin he replied, "No worries, Rohan's got your back," and as Ro lowered himself in carefully, Charlie went ahead and jumped in, splashing water in his wake.

It felt absolutely great, for some reason he never expected it to be as warm as it was. But he was surrounded by a blissful clean feeling, like all the sweat and grime was being boiled away by natures bubble bath. He waded over to the edge of the spring where he could prop himself up on a rock below the surface, like a built in seat. Thanks again nature! "Isn't this great?" he asked his new friend, who he appreciated all the more for the Lord of the Rings reference.

The smile was back in full force. Finally, someone who understood Lord of the Rings references! It had been so long! The moment he was submerged to his shoulders, watch came crashing over him from Charlie lept and he got a face full of water. He sputtered, throwing a quick splash over to Charlie for good measure. "No, this is perfect! Made a new friend, someone who understands references mind you! And get taken to like. Probably the best hot spring ever. In the history of forever and now I just get to.. Do this." He leaned back against the warm rock backing of the spring itself, eyes closing in bliss.

"Do you live out here? Or just drive in every morning?"

Charlie laughed as Ro splashed at him, turning and ducking behind his shoulder. When Ro's attack had settled back in the water, Charlie sent another splash back. Leaning back as well, taking in a big breath full of steam, "Yep, glad you decided to come bug me on my lunch break," he replied, shutting his eyes as well.

"I live in the city actually, apartment. It's small and not great but hey, it's affordable and worth it for getting to come out here everyday," was his honest answer, though he had to add, "Gas money though? Nah man that shit sucks, especially since my old garbage car is really shitty with eating it up quickly."

Water cascaded his glasses and he sputtered once again, spitting some of the water out that had gotten in his mouth. "Me too." He now had a friend. An honest to God friend and it thrilled him to the very marrow. No one usually stuck around and here came Charlie. Sort of forcing himself in and Rowan found he didn't mind one bit. They would exchange numbers. Maybe hang out often. Rowan could show him his vast movie collection. Maybe tell him about the books and comics he had collected over the years.

They could go places together! Meet new people! "My apartment isn't much better. It's pretty small but.. I think I make it work. It's comfortable, at least." As he spoke about his car, Rowan smiled again. "At least you have one. I'm usually stuck trying to catch a ride if where I want to go is too far out or just.. Using my bike around town." Something that only worked half the time but did more had to be better than something that worked all the time but didn't get you very far, right?
Wehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

"Yeah comfortable! It's comfy but not like too comfy," he said in agreement to Ro's statement. Then about the car, and the imagined scene of Ro biking up the mountain roads like some athlete to get here. He laughed, "If I had to bike or Uber everywhere I'd either be broke or have massive calves so I see where your problem is."

"Yeah I sorta got lucky with my car. It was my sister's birthday present and then it was mine," he explained, to show that without his sister's old car he would be in the same situation as Ro. He thought for a moment, taking a finger and flicking the surface of the water just to hear that popping sound and watch it splash.

Truthfully, he had thought about getting a car, though money was something he severely lacked. If the job that Ceri promised landed him anything.. Maybe he'd be able to afford one. Even if it wasn't in the best condition. As long as he didn't blow half or most of his paycheck trying to repair it. Rowan felt himself floating and he gave Charlie an easy smile. "Makes me wish I had siblings sometimes, you know? I guess I was too much trouble for my parents and they decided they never wanted another." They had him later on in their lives though, so maybe age was merely doing what it did best.

"Eh, I don't have a lot of problems really. I mean.. Sure I get picked on a lot. Or beat up. Or yelled at but.. I mean it still isn't the worst. I'm kinda used to it." It was a good thing he finally met someone else who didn't enjoy yelling or hitting. He needed more friends like that. "Hey! Maybe you'd like to come over sometime? We could hang out. I've got the directors cut for Lord of the Rings. Or I mean.. Do you like gaming?"

Too much trouble for his parents? Charlie somehow doubted that. His parents had 2 girls, and they alone were crazy enough and somehow decided to do a third. They hadn't bargained for getting a Charlie, and if anyone was a lot it was him. He'd been significantly more hyperactive as a kid, until he mellowed down in high school when people suddenly decided he was cool. Until then though, he was one of those crazy kids who refused to wear shoes on hike's because they were earth benders, and could and would tell you what specie of owl that was from it's hoot.

"Having siblings is great but yeah it was a lot," he nodded and wiped at a steam bubble that had formed on his cheek.

Rowan's next statement was a tad concerning, beat up a lot? Were bikes that uncool nowadays? Well shit. "Oh shit, well if you ever need a ride somewhere don't hesitate to call or something, I'd feel bad if you were like a block away and got beat up on your bike," he said with a light chuckle, but was also serious. He always wanted to be helpful, especially if the person he was helping was a new friend.

Come over to play games! A gaming buddy was exactly what Charlie had been missing since coming to Cordova. He had hiking friends and talking friends and go have dinner friends and whatnot, but a good old fashion nerd friend was the last piece of his friendship puzzle. "Umm yEAH! I'd love too, what console?" he asked, immediately dropping into nerd speech, something he hadn't been able to do in a while.

He really liked Charlie. They were a lot alike and it thrilled him to finally meet someone who he felt on the same wavelength with. At the mention of catching a ride sometime, Rowan looked torn. He wouldn't want to inconvenience anyone but.. If he was actually offering. It would be rude to turn down a friend, right?

"If you're sure, I'd like that. I'd help with gas and that sorta stuff." If he knew they'd be on the road a bit longer, he would even buy snacks! Maybe they would have a road trip! How amazing would that be?! "Oh man. I have a classic SNES, an old PS2 somewhere. I've been wanting a PS4 but.. Those things are too much money right now, you know? Plus I have a gaming rig set up! So I mean like.. We could play anything! I have a pretty huge movie collection too! Classic to new. You name it, I probably have it or could get it easily enough!"

Help with gas? This actually sounded like a pretty sick deal, hoping he didn't live too far. "Yeah I'm sure, I gotta warn you though my car has no AC so," he really had to get that fixed.

Charlie was always more of a nintendo guy than x box or playstation, he still had his game boy advance, even though it wouldn't work unless it was plugged in. His other most prized posession was the switch his parents had bought him this past Christmas. A+ mom and dad! And the movies Rowan? All the classics? Charlie could totally foresee a movie night at his place, for his own movie collection consisted of netflix, and bill and ted's excellent adventure on vhs which was useless without a vhs player.

Charlie smiled, "Sounds amazing, seriously dude like I'm coming over," he said with a few affirming nods. "Yooo do you play like straight melee or like strategy games? What's your vibe," he said, goofY!.
