The Food Rally
#1

The Food Rally was somewhere he went every time he visited job sites in Crestview. It was always a good option, given the variety of food rotated and there was always something good and quick to find. He was on lunch now, having found himself an empty table to sit and devour a queso guac burger, but with lettuce instead of a bun because some people just could not handle bread very well, okay? It was still good, for the most part. The fries were pretty disgusting. Chewy and greasy, but not in a good way. So, the most logical thing to do was throw them onto the ground before him and watch as the pigeons descended in hordes to peck them apart.

It was pretty fun entertainment, better than fucking around on his phone. Red enjoyed it, too. She liked birds like that, and he knew it was because she'd used to feed birds when she was still alive. Eventually, though, it did get kinda boring. So. He and Red derived a plan. He'd throw out a bunch of fries, wait for a flock to gather and get distracted. Then, he'd let Red become more than just immaterial, though still invisible, and rush them. So, out went about ten fries, which called forth no less than twenty pigeons. The all gathered, bustling together and pecking apart the fries as Red crept from where she'd been sitting atop the table. Closer, closer, closer.... Sunny watched her, and when she was close enough, his head tilted some and his eyes flickered into a deep ocean blue. With that energy, Red rushed forward into the flock. Surprised squawks of the first few birds her feet brushed against ignited a chain reaction of the entire flock.

Startled and surprised given they hadn't seen anything coming, the birds panicked and took to the sky, all flying in different directions as they couldn't spot the threat. Sunny laughed despite himself, looking across to Red as she stood in the middle of the storm of birds and screamed her enjoyment.

Eating out had become a bit of a rare treat for Zachary since he started cooking more meals at home. However, coming off a surprise shift at the ice cream shop always left him hungry as he'd been rushing out the door without a lunch, so why not treat himself? He had wandered through the different lines before grabbing his favorite, a piping hot vegetable curry and a spoon because Zachary was woefully inept with chopsticks.

His only complaint at the Food Rally was peak times were immensely popular, students and families taking up the long tables, where the noise rose to near deafening in the main seating area. Wanting the ability to hear himself think, Zachary had to carefully navigate his way to the farther ends.

He didn't expect to walk right up to a pigeon feeding frenzy with a guy tossing out whole handfuls of french fries. The scene entertained Zachary enough to stand there holding his tray, taking in shrill cooing of the pigeons as they ate. He remembered feeding them as a child and then running through them and laughing as they scattered. Much like how they were now...except the guy never moved and was looking rather attentively at something(?) right within the storm of birds. Did Zachary miss something? "Whoa. I've never seen them get startled at nothing before. What do you think caused it?" He said aloud, trying to match where the guy's gaze had landed. Maybe a small child had come through, one that fell below his eye level and had darted out of sight.

Oh. Whoops. Sunny, you look fucking nuts. In the moment, he'd sort of forgotten there were other people around with eyeballs. His gaze snapped to the guy nearby, blinking rapidly as if it would clear away the blue there. It didn't. For a moment, he just sort of stared blankly, internally grasping at straws for a response. "Dunno." He said finally, forcing a smile that had been sluggishly making its way across his lips to hurry up. "It was weird. Could be ghosts." Oof. Hopefully the dude didn't take him that seriously.

The guy's face was doing something weird. Zachary probably surprised him by talking, so he returned a friendly smile. "You believe in ghosts?" He asked not unkindly but curious. A couple of years ago Zachary would have rolled his eyes at the mere thought. However, he knew better now that there were creatures out there straight from folklore, so who knows? Ghosts had a decent chance of existing too.

He half expected the dude to just mumble 'yeah' and then find somewhere else to sit. Instead, he smiled kindly and questioned him further. Sunny relaxed a bit in his seat, realizing he wasn't immediately going to get busted, and shrugged loosely. "Vampires, werewolves, why not ghosts?" They were, in fact, very real. But he'd keep the dude's obliviousness sacred. The pigeons had relocated to another table by now, and Red drifted back toward the table, cautious but not entirely too worried.

Zachary took the guy's response as enough of an invitation to sit down, a seat diagonal in case the guy liked his space. "Fair point." He agreed. Vampires and were-beasts were most definitely real and if you didn't know now, then heaven help you.

"follow up question then, do you think ghosts are more or less dangerous than the others?" His guess was less dangerous, but mostly because the opposite would be a scary thing to consider.

Welp, he had a companion now. The question solicited a laugh, and he moved to reach for the beer he'd set in the middle of the table so it was more in his own space. "The others, definitely. I don't think ghosts can actually, dunno," He glanced briefly to Red, and put on a mockingly ominous voice as he lifted the beer to his lips, "Reach beyond the veil." He eyed the dude over his can.

Zachary hoped he hadn't interrupted anything, forced conversation was awful, but the guy seemed willing enough to humor him. The laughter was a positive sign, although the response had him quirking an eyebrow as he stirred his curry. "Then how would a ghost run through a flock of birds if they can't reach past the veil?" Unless the guy was implying birds were ghost sensitive, maybe they were. Maybe he could ask his new physic buddy Finn who knew animals better than anyone. And speaking of powers, Zachary wondered if they guy believed in them too.

Now that he was sat before him, Sunny got a better look at the dude. Looked about his age, definitely white, and the longer he looked, the more apparent it became that this guy had that same energy that clung to anyone magic. Sunny stiffened, just a fraction, and made a point to look at his eyes. It was daylight, so no vampire. That left two possibilites, and if he'd learned anything, it was that shifters could act like they were something they weren't pretty fucking well.

"Ever considered maybe pigeons can?" He questioned after a beat. Red was sitting beside him now, eyeing the guy with the same caution as Sunny did. From here, it was hard to get a reading on what the guy was feeling.

The response punched a laugh out of Zachary, vibrating his body enough for the lump of curry on his spoon to fall back into the bowl. He set the spoon down, eyes rolling playfully. "Okay. I most certainly have not." Zachary admitted. "You might be on to something."

Now Zachary was not picking up on any power signatures, simply because he hadn't learned how to keep his aura reader on yet, but he did pick up on the concentrated stare being leveled at him. Slowly, he lowered his hands down to his thighs, chin turning down as he shot over a questioning look. "Umm, Do I have something on my face? You're looking pretty intently there man." Zachary didn't want to start something here and wouldn't have a problem getting up and moving. The guy wasn't being hostile or anything, but Zachary knew enough to pick up on tension crackling between them.

Well, oops. He guessed it'd been kind of an intense stare. But Sunny straightened in his seat some as a few strands of the dude's confusion actually reached him, being intense enough. Sunny blinked and shook his head, his fists balling and releasing again on his lap as he worked out the numbness of the tips of his fingers. "No, sorry." He said, and because he hadn't shied away from it before, went on to say, "Just noticed you've got something to you. Abilities. Are you a Were?" If he was, or even if he showed signs of panic at the question, Sunny was ready to flip the table they were at and make a b-line for his truck.

Zachary had taken a self conscious hand to wipe the backside by his mouth. What if there was some curry glob resting there? It came away clean, but no time for relief as a bombshell was dropped on their friendly conversation. "W-what?" Zachary sputtered. Later he'd be grateful he didn't have a spoonful of curry in his mouth. "No I'm not. Wait. Are you?" His eyes narrowed and unconsciously flashed white as his power pushed out and hit a resounding wall around the other.

"You're something too." He said accusingly, which in hindsight was obvious, but at the moment Zachary only felt indignation for not picking up on it first.

There it was, panic and confusion at being so openly exposed. He swore he wasn't and questioned him on his own abilities. Sunny didn't smile, still disbelieving. "What can you do, then?" He questioned. He'd need proof that he didn't turn into some disgusting monster.

What took place next was a staring contest, a battle of wills which ended in Zachary huffing out conceit and deciding to just fuck it. "Fine." He snapped, eyes landing on the beer bottle.

"Mind if I borrow this?" His brow raised in a challenge. If the guy wanted a demonstration so bad he should be willing to sacrifice his drink.

Fine. There was an edge there that Sunny himself had no doubt chiseled in. He was asked for his drink, and with a skeptical purse of his lips, he moved to push it over. There was a fleeting thought of the dude breaking it and using it as some kind of weapon, but if he was a were then he'd have more than a broken beer bottle at his disposal to harm him.

After a single glance to check for spectators, there were none (that Zachary could see), Zachary spread his fingers around the bottle and with practiced ease allowed his power to take over. Ice crystals spread out from his fingers, building down rapidly until they hit the wood of the table. Inside, the remaining beer expanded ever so slightly, making tiny crackling sounds until it too was frozen. It took less than a few seconds and once done, Zachary pushed the bottle back to it's owner with a 'there you go' gesture.

Then, like something out of Frozen, the bottle was incased in ice. Sunny blinked, glanced to Red who met him with a mirrored expression of surprise. When the bottle came back his way, he extended his fingers to touch at the ice. Real, no illusion. "Huh." He said, wiping the wetness on his fingers from the ice onto his pant leg. "That's pretty sick." And ultimately extremely comforting. No vampire, no shifter. Someone like him, like Piper, like Lora.

Zachary leaned back and crossed his arms, watching the other inspect the frozen beer. "Thanks." He said, happy to have dispelled some of the lingering tension. Despite having very limited were knowledge, Zachary would put money on having ice powers being a clear indication that he didn't howl at the moon.

With his side cleared up, that did leave the obvious question. "So what about you?" He asked with more reservation, expression guarded. Hopefully his companion would be kind enough to reciprocate.

Sunny nodded, looked at the beer a moment longer, before glancing up at the prompt. Well. He couldn't just sit there and ask to touch him and see what he was feeling. So, he looked to Red fully then, nodded his head and followed her with a blue gaze as she moved to linger beside the guy. His head tilted some as he lent energy toward her, lips downturned just a touch from the effort. He'd feel a tug on his earlobe, and a hand on his shoulder.

His shoulders lowered a smidge at the nod. Good, at least the guy was willing. Zachary watched with bated breath to see what sort of magic his companion possessed. First guess was something with air as he remembered the storm of pigeons that had flown off in a dozen different directions.

But the guy made no hand motions, nor did Zachary feel a gust of wind down his front as expected. Rather, there was this teasing feeling, almost a friendly touch from behind on his shoulder, followed by a playful tug at his ear. Alarmed, Zachary whipped his head to the side, eyes searching and finding nothing, but the pressure on his shoulder remained. Almost like there was a... "No way." Zachary said with startling realization. "That's not...can't be...no. A ghost?" Holy shit and holy ghost.

This was actually pretty funny. Sunny found himself chuckling at the irony of it, how they'd theorized about how ghosts weren't real just a minute ago. He was quick to pick up on what was happening. Sunny shrugged, moved a hand to wave into the air. "Only if you believe." He said. Red gave the guy a good pat on the cheek.

"Evidence is pretty sound." Zachary squirmed as the invisible hand(?), please be a hand, moved to his face. He had no idea which direction to flinch back since he couldn't actually discern where the specter was. His own hand went up to bat in the assumed direction, but of course he felt nothing. Turning back to the living, he asked his next question cautiously, subtly trying to look around as if he could somehow pinpoint the ghost's whereabouts. "Are you able to just see them or can you control them too?"

Red made faces at the guy as he looked around for her. Sunny chuckled openly. "I don't control anyone. I just get to decide if they get to do what they want to." He said, careful not to sound too cocky about his control in the situation, lest he get an earful from Red. "Otherwise, I can just see them and speak to them. Red is the one that's always around." He gestured in her direction, where she was standing beside him with her tongue out and eyes bugged wide. It was still weird to talk about, but he was getting used to it. With Bandit not around, he had to find someone to share with, right?

With a direction given, Zachary angled his body so he could see both the guy and the um, empty space where this Red was suppose to be. "That's really cool." He said towards the other psychic. It was essentially two powers at once, communicating the dead and animating them to a degree. A lot of mayhem could be made with that combination, provided the ghost was also on board. Zachary's eyes flickered back to the empty space. The ghost was no longer touching him, although his goose bumps had goose bumps now from that experience, and he hoped he was facing them at least somewhat dead on (pun not intended). "Ah, nice to meet you Red?" He said to the space, feeling more than a little wrong-footed while also realizing the difficulty the guy must face speaking to something others couldn't see or hear.

The attempt to include her was kind, and Red looked to Sunny with a pouty lip.

'He's sweet. I like him! Keep 'im.' Sunny huffed, shook his head, and looked to the guy. "You too, what's your name?"
Wehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The huff and head shake was probably because Zachary had gotten the ghost's location dead wrong (pun intended this time). So he gave an apologetic smile. He'll pay more attention to the guy's gaze moving forward, although this 'Red' could be anywhere at anytime.

"I'm Zachary." He reached for his fork and gave it twirl. "And what about you?" It would be funny if it was Cole like the kid in The Sixth Sense because both of them could see dead people.
